What is SPC flooring?

SPC stands for stone plastic composite. It's a type of luxury vinyl with a rigid core made from limestone and vinyl, topped with a printed design layer and a protective wear layer. The stiff core makes SPC flooring very stable, so it doesn't expand and contract as much with temperature changes and won't dent as easily as flexible vinyl.

Why choose rigid core click LVT?

SPC planks lock together with a click system and float over a suitable underlay, so there's no adhesive and fitting is much quicker than glue down LVT. The rigid core also hides minor subfloor imperfections, and many ranges come with an underlay already attached, making SPC a popular choice for DIY installs and renovations.

The waterproof core means spills won't swell or damage the boards, so SPC suits kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and hallways. It's also warmer and quieter underfoot than tiles, and hard-wearing enough for homes with children and pets.

SPC vs Laminate Flooring

SPC and laminate both click together and float, but they're built very differently. Laminate has a wood fibreboard core that can swell if it gets wet, while SPC has a rigid stone-vinyl core that's waterproof. That makes SPC the safer choice for kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere spills are likely. It's also quieter and warmer underfoot, while laminate can be slightly cheaper for dry living areas.

SPC vs Glue Down LVT

Glue down LVT is thinner and bonded to the subfloor, which suits large commercial areas and needs a perfectly smooth base. SPC is thicker and clicks together, so it's faster to fit, more forgiving of small subfloor imperfections, and can usually go over existing hard floors. For most home renovations, SPC is the quicker and easier option.

Is SPC flooring waterproof?

Yes, the rigid SPC core is waterproof, so it won't swell or warp if it gets wet. That makes it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms. Standing water should still be wiped up promptly, and always follow the product's fitting guidance around edges and wet areas.

What's the difference between SPC and LVT?

SPC is a type of LVT. Standard LVT is usually thin and flexible and glued down, while SPC has a rigid stone plastic composite core and clicks together. That makes SPC more stable and easier to fit over existing floors.

Can SPC flooring go over underfloor heating?

Most SPC flooring is suitable for underfloor heating, typically with a maximum floor surface temperature of around 27°C. Check the product details or ask our team before ordering.

Do you need underlay for SPC flooring?

Many SPC floors have an underlay already attached, so you only need a damp-proof membrane over concrete. If yours doesn't, use a thin, high-density underlay designed for rigid core flooring, not a thick laminate underlay.

Can you lay SPC flooring over existing tiles?

Usually, yes. As long as the tiles are flat, secure and level, SPC can be floated over them without removing the old floor. Deep grout lines or uneven tiles may need levelling first.
